Open Book / Open Studio
In collaboration with the Studio Art Graduate, Zachary Meisner, we began the process of designing his book by having our first meeting at the library to take a look at artist books that he favored. Zach, having all sculpture-based pieces, really enjoyed the way that Ken Price’s work was displayed in “Ken Price Sculpture: A Retrospective”. After looking at the layout and type options that we both favored, I began to sketch a few of these options myself to give Zach a clearer idea of what I had in mind for his work.
Zach’s sculptures were made by the use of built-up acrylic paint onto a glass surface, which he then let dry and stretched over different materials such as MDF. Using InDesign, I was able to begin experimenting with different layouts and use of type that drew from the “stretch” concept found in Zach’s work. I also found his use of color, light and shape to be very unique, which led me to my first few layout designs in which I tried to reflect those.
After multiple meetings in which we discussed many layout and type options, Zach and I were able to work together to help my design process in order to print a book and create an interactive PDF for his potential future employers. After visiting Zach’s studio multiple times, I observed that each and every piece was unique in the way that I would always approach the sculpture, then look to the side of it, just before getting very close to see more detail. This was a concept that I wanted to approach when applying design in the layout.
